In this excerpt from the new book “He’s The One with the Money,” the author reveals how a $40,000-a.k. salary for a Manhattan attorney at one of the world’s biggest law firms earned him the title of “He has the money.”
It’s an extraordinary description, given the fact that Manhattan’s chief of the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has been criticized by several New York lawmakers and the government watchdog group Common Cause for his office’s role in prosecuting and incarcerating a number of wealthy New Yorkers, including hedge fund manager Carl Icahn.
In an interview with NBC News, the author, Peter Singer, says that as a Manhattan district attorney in the 1990s, he worked with prosecutors to bring in people with huge assets, often in ways that made them difficult to bring to justice.
“I think the most interesting thing is the fact they had to prove they had the money,” Singer said.
“They had to have a lot of money.
It’s not as simple as you say.”
In the book, Singer describes his relationship with Manhattan’s district attorney, Cyrus Vance, who was a longtime friend of Singer’s who became an important surrogate to his client.
“Cyrus had become my mentor,” Singer says in the excerpt.
“He understood my work ethic, he understood my values and he understood that I would have to put in a lot to get where I was in life.”
Singer says he didn’t have the money to pay for his attorney’s fees, but Vance offered to pay them for him.
The two men became very close and Vance eventually hired him to work on a case involving an accused mobster.
Vance told the author that he often gave Singer advice, and that the pair often spoke of the New York attorney’s job title as the “king of the criminal underworld.”
In a statement to NBC News about the book’s release, Singer said he did not know Vance’s role.
“It’s a fair description, but the truth is that Vance has never been my mentor.
He never was,” Singer told NBC News.
Vance’s office is also known for prosecuting a number in the New Yorker magazine and Vanity Fair magazine, as well as prominent individuals in the entertainment industry.
But while Vance has praised Singer for his career, the book says Vance’s reputation as a prosecutor has taken a hit in recent years.
Singer says Vance is a “total jerk.”
“The one thing I have with Vance that I admire is his ability to understand the complexity of criminal law, which is what he has done over the last few years,” Singer explained.
“And that’s something that I don’t think is particularly useful for a prosecutor to understand.
It has always been very much about money, and it has always taken a lot more money to prosecute a case than it has for most of the other professions.”
The book details the ways that Singer has taken advantage of the wealth of others.
In one case, Singer had hired a top Manhattan prosecutor to represent a wealthy client, and the client’s family became concerned when the prosecutor didn’t respond to repeated calls for an interview.
“We wanted to speak to him about this matter, so we contacted his wife, and she called him to talk about it,” Singer recalled.
“But that was the end of it.
I told her, ‘Listen, I’m going to take you up on your offer.
I’m not going to give you money.'”
Singer was hired in 1991 by Vance to represent another wealthy client of his, a man with a history of substance abuse.
Singer said the client went into a rehab facility after the arrest, and he said he was told the man would be able to get his substance abuse treatment in New York.
The case against the client involved a former police officer who was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
In the interview, Singer also detailed the time he spent in prison, where he met the man who eventually became his partner, and said that they were able to talk with the man’s son and had sex.
“One of the things that made this work so good was the fact he had the kid who was my partner.
He knew everything about him, and then we could talk,” Singer remembered.
“When you’re dealing with the most important criminal cases, it is incredibly important that the public knows how the police handle these cases.
You need to know the facts, and you need to understand how the prosecutors handle these kinds of cases.”
Singer said that while Vance is an honorable man, the case against his client, John Deacon, is “the best I’ve ever had.”
“I’m so proud of the guy.
He has a great heart, and I don, I think he’s a very honorable man,” Singer added.
“There’s no question that there are some serious issues that I have to deal with in my life.”
Vance’s attorney declined to comment on the book.
